Q

What are the benefits of blood transfusion?

A

Increases Hb —> increases DO2 because increased oxygen carrying capacity (goal directed perfusion) —> increased blood volume if patient is empty

Q

Talk to us about Alpha stat vs pH stat blood gas management

A

Alpha - Temperature Uncorrected, does not account for solubility of co2. When cold this blood gas would be more acidic because assumes co2 not dissolved into blood (ABG warms blood to 37 degrees when analysing sample)

pH - Temperature Corrected so accounts for co2 solubility in the blood especially when cooking as co2 solubility increases. When cold this blood gas would be pH neutral as the CO2 that is dissolved in the blood is taken into consideration and compensation with increased co2. Our centre we do this be reducing gas sweep as we don’t have co2 in our blender.

pH stat used when cooling below 25 degrees in our centre.
