blood Flashcards
What are the functions of blood?
transportation
regulation
protection
What does the blood transport?
gases, nutrients, hormones, waste products
what does the blood regulate?
pH, body temperature, osmotic pressure
What are two components that help the blood protect
clotting and white blood cells
What type of blood sample takes blood from the vein?
venipuncture
What type of blood sample test cutaneous blood? What is cutaneous blood?
Finger or heel stick, used for testing blood glucose and lactose
Blood that is close to the surface of the skin, and determine how much heat is loss to the surrounding environment
What type of blood sample test arterial blood?
Arterial stick, used for O2 content and is the most accurate blood pressure measurements
What is the percentages of blood plasma?
91.5% water, 8.5% solute (most are blood plasma proteins)
What are the three main blood plasma proteins?
albumins, globulins, fibrinogen
What are the three main compents of the formed elements in blood?
white blood cells, platelets, red blood cells
What is the total % of blood occupied by red blood cells called?
hematocrit (females 38-46%, males 40-54%)
What is anemia?
Below normal hematocrit (common in females and patents undergoing chemo therapy)
What is above normal hematocrit called?
Polycythemia
What does polycythemia do to the blood?
increases viscosity of the blood which increases resistance and makes it more difficult for the heart to pump
What is blood doping?
Blood doping uses EPO drugs to increase O2 levels to the heart which increases stamina
