blood Flashcards
8 functions of blood
- transporting oxygen and nutrients to all cells
- transporting co2 and other waste products away from cells
- transporting hormones to cells
- painting the pH of body fluids
- distributing heat and maintaining body temperature
- maintaining water content and ion concentration of body fluids
- protecting against disease-causing micro-organisms
- clotting when vessels are damaged
the structure of blood
blood is composed of
- plasma: the liquid part, makes up approx 55% of BV
- formed elements: the non-liquid part, makes up 45% of BV and consists of RBC, WBC, and platelets
plasma
- structure and function
mixture of water with dissolved substances such as sugar and slats
function: transport components of blood (cells, nutrients, wastes, hormones, proteins, antibodies) throughout body
Erythrocytes
red blood cells
40-45% of BV
- cells are biconcave, flattened in middle and raised sides, this increases SA for oxygen exchange
- do not contain nucleus, this increases flexibility to move through BV
- 120 life span
function: transport oxygen from lungs to cells
Leucocytes
- function
- types
protects body from infection
1% of BV
- larger than RBC
neutrophils: contain enzymes ro digest pathogens
monocytes: engulf pathogens and aged/damaged cells
lymphocytes: immune response - cell-mediated immunity yes T-Lymphocytes and antibody-mediated immunity uses B-lymphocytes
basophils: responsible for allergic reactions
eosinophils: lead to inflammatory responses
Thrombocytes
or platelets
small fragments of cells that adhere to lining and from a. scaffold for the coagulation of the blood to form a clot
