Q

8 functions of blood

A
  • transporting oxygen and nutrients to all cells
  • transporting co2 and other waste products away from cells
  • transporting hormones to cells
  • painting the pH of body fluids
  • distributing heat and maintaining body temperature
  • maintaining water content and ion concentration of body fluids
  • protecting against disease-causing micro-organisms
  • clotting when vessels are damaged

Q

the structure of blood

A

blood is composed of
- plasma: the liquid part, makes up approx 55% of BV
- formed elements: the non-liquid part, makes up 45% of BV and consists of RBC, WBC, and platelets

Q

plasma
- structure and function

A

mixture of water with dissolved substances such as sugar and slats
function: transport components of blood (cells, nutrients, wastes, hormones, proteins, antibodies) throughout body

Q

Erythrocytes

A

red blood cells
40-45% of BV
- cells are biconcave, flattened in middle and raised sides, this increases SA for oxygen exchange
- do not contain nucleus, this increases flexibility to move through BV
- 120 life span
function: transport oxygen from lungs to cells

Q

Leucocytes
- function
- types

A

protects body from infection
1% of BV
- larger than RBC
neutrophils: contain enzymes ro digest pathogens
monocytes: engulf pathogens and aged/damaged cells
lymphocytes: immune response - cell-mediated immunity yes T-Lymphocytes and antibody-mediated immunity uses B-lymphocytes
basophils: responsible for allergic reactions
eosinophils: lead to inflammatory responses
