Block VI - Electronic Systems Flashcards
Define: Thermocouple
A thermocouple is a junction of two dissimilar metals that produce voltage when heated.
Purpose of Continuity Tests:
A continuity test makes sure there are no shorts/breaks in the wire, from one end of the wire to the other end of the wire. A voltage check, checks for required voltage as specified.
Purpose of Digital Multimeters:
A Digital Multimeter measures voltage, amperage, and resistance ohms also diode check. A Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) identifies how far (in feet) if there is a short/break in the wire. The machine operates by sending a signal down the wire and reading where the break is and sending the signal back.
What is the Pitot Static System?
The Pitot Static system consists of a Pitot-static tube and three indicators, all connected with tubing that carries air. The three indicators are the altimeter, the airspeed, and the rate-of-climb indicator.
Radar Altimeter:
The H-60 is equipped with a radar altimeter that provides continuous measurement of height above land or water. It has a range of 0 to 5,000 feet, with an accuracy of +3ft or +4%, whichever is greater.
However, only a range of 0 to 1050 feet is indicated on the FD presentation.
What’s the Doppler Effect?
The basic principle of the Doppler Effect is the apparent change in frequency of a received signal caused by the relative motion between the sender and receiver.
Sonar Operations:
During active sonar, the transmitter is sending out a signal and listens for a return of sound waves. During passive sonar, the transmitter is listening for noise only. Azimuth is a target clockwise angular displacement in the horizontal plane with the respect to true north. Range is the distance of the target from the transducer.
Purpose of TACAN/IFF:
Tactical navigation collects navigation information for visual display on cockpit indicators. Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) replies to interrogations from other aircraft or ships. H-60 has respond only capability. Five modes 1-4 and C, Mode 4 is military use only.
What’s the Downed Aviator Locator System (DALS) do?
Downed Aviator Locator System (DALS) locks on signal from PRC-112 provide pilots with direction of flight and distance to find downed aviator or aircrew.
What is the Horizontal Situation Video Display (HSVD) ?
Primary flight instruments display.
What is the Missile Warning Set (MWS) ?
Electronic countermeasure unit designed to protect helicopters and low, slow flying aircraft against surface to air and air to air missiles. The MWS will detect a missile fired at the aircraft and provide a sector warning message to the pilot through the indicator and control unit of the AN/APR-39A(V) Radar Signal Detecting Set.
The AN/AVR-2 Laser Detecting Set (LDS):
The AN/AVR-2 Laser Detecting Set (LDS) is a frequency
extension of the AN/APR-39 Radar Signal Detecting Set (RSDS). The LDS shares three of the ten RSDS’s Weapon Replaceable Assemblies (WRA’s). The LDS detects and displays to the aircraft pilot information concerning the laser environment around the aircraft.
What’s FLIR?
The Forward Looking Infrared System (FLIR) provides real time infrared and daylight imagery for a variety of missions including:
Target detection and recognition
Search and Rescue
Surveillance
What does FLIR provide?
Target distance via an onboard laser range finder. Provides a targeting laser to designate targets for laser guided missiles.
Purpose of ESM:
The Electronic Support Measures (ESM) system passively detects, classifies, locates, and tracks external radio frequency (RF) emitters. The components of the ESM system of the include the ESM Receiver Processor, Forward port ESM antenna, Forward starboard ESM
antenna, Aft port ESM antenna, and the Aft starboard ESM antenna.
