Purpose of Digital Multimeters:

A

A Digital Multimeter measures voltage, amperage, and resistance ohms also diode check. A Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) identifies how far (in feet) if there is a short/break in the wire. The machine operates by sending a signal down the wire and reading where the break is and sending the signal back.

What is the Pitot Static System?

A

The Pitot Static system consists of a Pitot-static tube and three indicators, all connected with tubing that carries air. The three indicators are the altimeter, the airspeed, and the rate-of-climb indicator.

Radar Altimeter:

A

The H-60 is equipped with a radar altimeter that provides continuous measurement of height above land or water. It has a range of 0 to 5,000 feet, with an accuracy of +3ft or +4%, whichever is greater.
However, only a range of 0 to 1050 feet is indicated on the FD presentation.

Q

What’s the Doppler Effect?

A

The basic principle of the Doppler Effect is the apparent change in frequency of a received signal caused by the relative motion between the sender and receiver.

Q

Sonar Operations:

A

During active sonar, the transmitter is sending out a signal and listens for a return of sound waves. During passive sonar, the transmitter is listening for noise only. Azimuth is a target clockwise angular displacement in the horizontal plane with the respect to true north. Range is the distance of the target from the transducer.

Purpose of TACAN/IFF:

A

Tactical navigation collects navigation information for visual display on cockpit indicators. Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) replies to interrogations from other aircraft or ships. H-60 has respond only capability. Five modes 1-4 and C, Mode 4 is military use only.

What’s the Downed Aviator Locator System (DALS) do?

A

Downed Aviator Locator System (DALS) locks on signal from PRC-112 provide pilots with direction of flight and distance to find downed aviator or aircrew.

What is the Missile Warning Set (MWS) ?

A

Electronic countermeasure unit designed to protect helicopters and low, slow flying aircraft against surface to air and air to air missiles. The MWS will detect a missile fired at the aircraft and provide a sector warning message to the pilot through the indicator and control unit of the AN/APR-39A(V) Radar Signal Detecting Set.

The AN/AVR-2 Laser Detecting Set (LDS):

A

The AN/AVR-2 Laser Detecting Set (LDS) is a frequency
extension of the AN/APR-39 Radar Signal Detecting Set (RSDS). The LDS shares three of the ten RSDS’s Weapon Replaceable Assemblies (WRA’s). The LDS detects and displays to the aircraft pilot information concerning the laser environment around the aircraft.

Purpose of ESM:

A

The Electronic Support Measures (ESM) system passively detects, classifies, locates, and tracks external radio frequency (RF) emitters. The components of the ESM system of the include the ESM Receiver Processor, Forward port ESM antenna, Forward starboard ESM
antenna, Aft port ESM antenna, and the Aft starboard ESM antenna.

Q

Purpose of TACAN?

A

The TACAN navigation set consists of a receiver/transmitter and control. The TACAN set receives an UHF signal from a TACAN surface station (ground or shipboard) or aircraft and calculates the magnetic bearing and slant range to that station.

17
Q

Describe the Doppler Radar set:

A

Ground speed sensor for the main backup (to the GPS) tactical navigation system. It provides three axis velocities that are used to compute the ground speed that may be displayed on the HSVD or MPD.

18
Q

Describe VHF:

A

Very High Frequency/Ultra High Frequency radio set is line of sight communication. Two radios provide AM, FM, VHF, and UHF coverage between 30.00 MHz and 399.975 MHz.

19
Q

Describe HF:

A

High Frequency radio set is over the horizon. The HF radio operates in the frequency range of 2 to 29.9999 MHz, with 280,000 channels at intervals of 100 Hz.

20
Q

Describe ICS:

A

Intercommunication system (ICS) is the internal communications (talking to one another in the aircraft).

21
Q

Purpose of Multi-Mode Radar System:

A

The Multi-Mode Radar System provides radar tracking, surface ship imaging, and IFF interrogations for aircraft.

22
Q

Purpose of the AFCS:

A

The automatic flight control system smoothes out the flight controls to enable the pilot to handle the aircraft. Improves aircraft handling and stability, controls pitch roll and yaw. It is made up of three systems. They include the Stability Augmentation System (SAS), the Stabilator, and the DAFCS.

23
Q

Describe Countermeasures:

A

Dispenses metallic chaff, flares, and two other categories of expendables to defeat air intercept, anti-aircraft artillery, and surface to air missiles.

24
Q

Purpose of the AAR-47 MWS:

A

The AAR-47 Missile Warning Set is a passive system that warns the aircrew of attacks by infrared and laser guided missiles. Can be set to automatically launch countermeasures when a threat is detected.

25
Q

Purpose of ALQ-144:

A

The ALQ-144 Infrared Countermeasures (IRCM) Set provides protection from infrared guided missiles. It continuously emits infrared radiation to decoy incoming missiles. Upper IRCM jammer is mounted on the main rotor pylon. Lower IRCM jammer is mounted underneath the tail cone.

26
Q

Describe the ESM Set Subsystem:

A

The ESM Set Subsystem provides four passive sensor antennas and processing equipment to detect, classify, locate, and track external radar emitter platforms in the aircraft operating environment. ESM System data provides aircrew tactical situational awareness via the Mission Diplays Subsystem and remote parent ship ESM display via the RTS (Radio Terminal Set) System. The ESM Set Subsystem identifies hostile radar platforms for overall threat alert, assessment, and coordinated threat response action.
