Block C Flashcards
1
Q
Name some regulations of the kidneys.
A
- Regulation of H2O and inorganic ion balance
- Removal of metabolic waste products from blood
- Removal of foreign chemicals in the blood
- Gluconeogenesis
- Endocrine functions
2
Q
What is the nephron?
A
The functional unit of the kidneys.
3
Q
What is the nephron comprised of?
A
- A tubular component (Contains what will become urine)
- Vascular component (Blood supply)
4
Q
What controls glomerular filtration?
A
The diameters of afferent and efferent arterioles, which are in turn controlled by sympathetic vasoconstrictor nerves.
5
Q
What happens to the filtrate when it leaves the glomerulus?
A
It enters into the Bowman’s space and then into the Proximal convoluted tubule.
6
Q
How do the kidneys control blood pressure?
A
Controlling the blood volume.
7
Q
What is the effect of angiotensin II on the kidneys?
A
- Causes direct contriction of renal arterioles
- Stimulation of aldosterone synthesis- Sodium obsorption and icnrease in intravascular blood volume.
