BLOCK 2 - POWER PLANTS Flashcards
Engine danger area - intake/exhaust
20ft in front of intake and 35ft wide by 80ft length area from the engine exhaust
Engine danger area - during max power behind exhaust
70ft wide by 150ft in length
Engine danger area - APU noise restriction
75ft radius around the AC for 2 hours with no earplugs (non if earplugs)
Engines
2 Rolls Royce 611-8 Tay engines, axial flow, medium bypass ratio, turbofan with 13,850 lbs of thrust at sea level.
Fan location and function
front of the engine
2 Air streams- one bypass around the engine core and one through
1st Compressor section
3 stage LP compressor, it cools certain parts of the engine and pressurizes engine oil seals
2nd compressor section
12 stage HP compressor, moves air to the combustion section
1st Turbine
Drives the HP compressor
2nd Turbine
Drives the LP compressor
Exhaust
creates thrust to propel the AC
power levers location and function
Located on the center control pedestal.
It controls engine thrust.
Thrust Reversers location and function
Located on rear of engine assembly.
slows AC when landing
Engine Fuel System-
controls fuel flow
Oil System-
A DRY SUMP system with oil stored in a tank installed on L side of engine.
Lubricates bearings, gears.
EICAS location
middle instrument panel on display units 3 and 4.
Engine Indication System EICAS Function
Displays Engine Pressure Ratio (ERP), LP and HP Tachometer, turbine gas temperature, fuel flow, oil pressure, oil temp, engine vibration monitoring, engine fuel temp, fuel quantity and hydraulic pressure.
Engine vibration monitor (EVM)-
tells crew of impending failure (vibration has reached max allowance)
Fuel Hopper location and capacity
Flapper Valves?
Boost pump?
The space between the centerline rib outboard to wings first structural rib.
190 us gallons capacity.
Fuel pours into hoppers via flapper valves preventing fuel back into wings during turning.
Fuel boost pump pumps fuel to the engines
Fuel Ejector Pump-
makes sure that fuel hopper remains full. It gets fuel from wing to hopper.
Boost pumps location, output and psi
Mounted outside on the back wall of the fuel tanks in the main landing gear wheel well,
OUTPUT OF 8000 LBS PER HOUR AT 22 PSI.
Bleed Air
Pneumatics system is to provide a common manifold (bleed air manifold).
Hot compressed air for anti icing, pressurization, and air conditioning
Auxiliary Power Unit function
Provides power for ground maintenance. Cools/heats a/c without starting the engine.
Auxiliary Power Unit during flight
used as back up electrical power supply
Auxiliary Power Unit during altitude below 30,000 feet
Assist in air starting an engine of the aircraft.
Auxiliary Power Unit location
below the right engine pylon
How many HP Fuel Cocks? Location and Function
- lower center pedestal below power levers. controls fuel to the engine.
