Block 14 - Phase 1 Fundamentals of Flight Flashcards
What are the basic fundamental physics of flight?
Acceleration Speed Velocity Force Inertia
Newton’s 1st law
Object at rest will remain at rest or remain in motion until acted upon by outside force
Newton’s 2nd law
Object moving in uniform speed is acted upon external force will be directly proportional to amount of force and proportional to the mass of object being moved
Newton’s 3rd law
Every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Bernoulli’s principle
Fluid passing through construction is increased and it’s pressure decreased
What are the principles of flight and aeronautic terms?
Lift
Weight
Drag
Thrust
What are the aircraft axis?
Longitudinal axis
Lateral axis
Vertical axis
Longitudinal axis
Imaginary ref line running down center of aircraft between nose and tail
Lateral axis
Imaginary ref line running parallel to the wings
Vertical axis
Imaginary ref running from top to bottom of aircraft
What do ailerons control?
Roll / longitudinal axis
What do elevators control?
Pitch - lateral axis
Who do rudders control?
Yaw - vertical axis
What tilts the plane (angle)? Controls roll/pitch
The cyclic stick (roll/pitch)
What are components of a rotary wing aircraft?
The cyclic stick Tail rotor Flap Spoiler Speed brakes Slats
What does the term collective mean?
Rotor is turning and the blades are at zero angle (flat pitch)
Define AOA
Angle of attack
What are some Landing gear main components?
Shock strut
Tires
Wheel brake
Retracting and extending mechanism
How should you approach a tire?
Fore and aft
What are some engine systems?
Turbojet
Turbo shaft
Turbo prop
Turbo fan

Purpose of Altimeters?
Shows height of aircraft above sea level
