Block 1 Glossary Flashcards
ADS-B
Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast
Means of Aircraft, Aerodrome vehicles, and other objects can automatically transmit and/or receive data such as:
ID, Position, Additional Data as appropriate in a broadcast made via Data Link
Track
The projection on the earth’s surface, of the path of an aircraft; the direction of which path at any point is usually expressed in degrees of True, Magnetic or Grid North
IAS
Indicated Airspeed
Airspeed indicated on the Airspeed indicator of an Aircraft.
(Uncorrected airspeed)
ALT
Altitude
A vertical distance of a level, point or object considered a point measured from Mean Sea Level.
ATS Surviellance
All Methods of remotely sensing air craft using certified/commissioned electronic equipment including PSR, SSR, MLAT, ADS-B without benefit of Visual observation
Air Traffic Control Instruction
A directive issued by ATC unit to pilots for air traffic control purposes
Linkage
An automated or manual function that matches Flight Plan Data and ATS Surveillance data
Controlled Airspace
Airspace of defined dimensions within which air traffic control services are provided
ATS Surveillance Advisory
Advice and information based on ATS Surveillance Observations
PSR
Primary Surveillance Radar
A radar system that detects objects by means of reflected radio signals
Radar
A radio detection device that provides information on range, azimuth, or elevation of objects
Transition Speed
The speed at which aircraft transition between Mach Speed and Indicated Airspeed while climbing or descending.
Vector
A heading giving by controllers to pilots to provide navigational guidance
TAS
True Air Speed
The air speed of an aircraft relative to undisturbed air.
ATS Surveillance - Monitoring
The use of ATS Surveillance for providing Aircraft with information and advice relative to significant deviations from their normal flight path
Separation
The spacing between aircraft, altitudes and tracks
Navigation Assistance
Navigation assistance may be in the form of position information, vectors or track/ground speed checks
PPS
Present Position Symbol
A visual indicator in symbolic form on a situation display, of the position of an Aircraft, vehicle or other object obtained after automatic processing of positional data
DCPC
Direct Controller Pilot Communication
Communication between a controller and a pilot without resorting to a relay through another unit
Mach Number
The ratio of airspeed of an object relative to the local speed of sound
ATS Surveillance - Control Service
An air traffic control service provided with information derived from ATS Surveillance Equipment sources
Air Traffic Control Clearance
An authorization issued by an ATC unit for an aircraft to proceed within controlled airspace in accordance with the conditions specified by that unit.
Non - ATS Surveillance Route
A route on which an aircraft can determine its own position, track and consequently its minimum IFR altitude without the benefit of ATS Surveillance information
Heading
The direction in which the longitudinal axis of an aircraft is pointed usually expressed in degree of True, Magnetic, Grid, and compass North
Readback
A procedure where by a receiving station repeats a received message or part there of to confirm it was received correctly
Same Track
In the application of separation, is an expression used by air traffic controllers to identify identical tracks of aircraft, or tracks that converge/diverge at an angle of 1degree to 44 degree inclusive.
ATS Surveillance Service
A term used to indicate a service provided directly by any means of an ATS Surveillance System
PaCS RAS DST
Aircraft ID
Clearance Limit
S.I.D.

Symbol that Identifies a Sector
RSE
Radar Site Equipment
Surveillance equipment owned and operated by NAV Canada
ATS Surveillance - Separation
Spacing of aircraft in accordance with established minima, based on information from ATS Surveillance
Separation Basics
To ensure the expeditious flow of traffic operate as close to the prescribed minimum as circumstances permit.
If circumstances call for extra caution provide extra separation
ATS Surveillance System
A generic term meaning variously, ADS-B, PSR, SSR or any comparable ground based system that enables the Identification of Aircraft.
Flight Level
The vertical distance measured in 100s of feet indicated on altimeter 29.92 inches of mercury
Traffic Information
Information issued by ATS to pilots regarding other known or observed traffic, that may be in such proximity to their position or intended route as to warrant their attention.
