Block 1: Gene expression and proteins: week 2 Flashcards
Describe the shape of ribosomes?
ribsomes have two subunits, one large and one smaller unit
How does each ribsosome subunit relate to its function?
The smaller sub unit binds together the TRNA and MRNA.
The larger sub unit catalyses the addition of amino acids to the extending peptide chain.
What effect do some antibiotics have on bacteria?
They inhibit protein synthesis within the bacteria.
How does the antibiotic tetracycline effect bateria?
It stops the entry of TRNA into the ribsome complex ( the smaller sub-unit)
How does the antibiotic chloramphenicol efect bateria?
it blocks the addition of new amino acids to the peptide chain.
what is proteome?
The protein make up of a cell, organ, or organism.
what does alternative splicing of a proteom depend on?
cell type
cell state
differentiation
development state
what are the common post translational modifications of proteins?
gylcosylation (addition of a sugar residues) and phosphorylation (addition of phosphate groups)
what does the localistaion of a protein depend on ?
the protein structure and post translational modifications.
