Block 1 Flashcards
Virology
The study of viruses and viral diseases.
Virologist
Someone who studies viruses.
Virion
A complete virus particle that consists of an RNA or DNA core with a protein coat sometimes with external envelopes and that is the extracellular infective form of a virus.
Virus
A broad general term used to describe any aspect of the infectious agent and includes: the infectious (virion) or inactivated virus particle, or viral nucleic acid and protein in the infected cell.
Viroid
An infectious particle smaller than any of the known viruses, an agent of certain plant diseases. The particle consists only of an extremely small circular RNA molecule, lacking the protein coat of a virus. IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A VIRUS.
Chamberland filter
Filter has pores smaller than bacteria. This filter pioneered the discovery of viruses, used in the tobacco mosaic virus experiment, and this was the first virus to pass through the filter.
Fowlpoxvirus
The first virus to be successfully propagated in embryonated hen’s eggs.
First animal virus
FMD, discovered using similar filter to chamberland filter.
Rinderpest
Only animal disease declared globally eradicated.
