Blakemore And Cooper Flashcards
Aim
To investigate the development of a kittens primary visual cortex
Sample
2 kittens
One horizontal environment and one vertical
Variables
IV= horizontal or vertical black and white stripes
DV= measuring behavioural and physical blindness
Controls
5 hours a day
Black collar to restrict vision
WWHF
W= development of visual cortex
W= 2 kittens from birth
H= kept in darkness everyday apart from 5 hours
F= kittens were taken into a well lit room and visual/physical reaction was recorded
Behavioural finding
Behavioural blindness was found as kittens in the horizontal environment can’t detect vertically aligned objects
Physiological findings
Physical blindness occurred as some cells were not firing e.g. kittens in the vertical environment horizontal neurons weren’t firing
Strengths
High int val- collar (control)
High int rel- standardised
Quant and qual data
Weaknesses
Small sample- only 2 kittens (unrepresentative)
Limited usefulness- can’t apply to humans
