Bladder Anatomy Flashcards
What are the functions of the bladder?
Temporarily store urine (up to 600ml).
Assists in urine expulsion by contraction.
Name the 4 parts of the bladder?
Apex (superior)
Fundus
Body
Neck (joins with urethra).
Where do the ureters enter the bladder? How does this area differ from the rest of the bladder?
The trigone.
Has smooth walls and the rest has rugae.
What specialisations does the bladder lining of the bladder have?
Transitional epithelium.
Goblet cells to produce mucous to prevent urine contacting cells.
Rugae to increase surface area.
Detrusor muscle (in muscularis) which has an outer longitudinal, middle circular, and inner longitudinal layer.
Name the location and function of the internal urethral sphincter?
Junction between bladder and urethra.
Prevents seminal regurgitation in males.
More physiological in females - no smooth muscle fibres.
