Why did they grow in popularity ?

A

Rejected peaceful methods appealing to the younger generation

They demanded change for Black Americans instead of asking

They believed self defence was completely justified and wanted all Black Americans to feel self respect.

They focused on wider social issues such as poverty and the anti war movement against Vietnam

Significance of Stokey Carmichael

A

Became chairman of SNCC in mag 1966 . Had a more of a radical approach to equality. His radical views caused many white supporters to leave the SNCC . Whilst on a march against fear took place in Mississippi James Meredith was shot and hospitalised . Both him and MLK made speeches but Carmicheal wanted a more radical response calling for black power .

Black panthers 1966

A

Believed black people needed black police and black officials supporting the community

They were only prepared to work with white people if they held the same beliefs .

They had a radical 10 point plan to transform society . This included ending capitalism ,free healthcare and an end to all wars

They carried tapes and guns for self defence

They setup clinics and breakfast clubs for poor black children

Significance of the mexico olympics 1968

A

Provided an opportunity for black athletes to broadcast their black power support all across the world .

When 2 athletes were rewarded at the medal ceremony they saluted the black power movement . They were banned from the team however many young black Americans admired them for taking this stand and making their political views clear
