BLACK FEMINISM + ETHNIC INEQUALITIES Flashcards
What is black feminism?
- made from the dissatisfaction of other types of feminism because other feminists only focus on middle-class white women’s problems
what does Abbott et al argue about?
previous strands of feminism have been ethnocentric = white middle-class women
- perpetuated a victim ideology
- expected black women to write about their own experiences rather than contribute to the development of feminist theory as a whole
what does Brewer argue?
- the basis of black feminists is to understand race class and gender as a simultaneous force
- studies the interplay of race class and gender in shaping the lives and restricting the life chances of black women
evaluation of Brewer
accused of emphasising racial differences in the expanse of others such as class age sexuality and disability
legislations like sex discrimination aim to prevent discrimination on the grounds of class gender and race to empower ethnic minorities and it does show that Indian and Chinese students outperform the white students
what does Mirza argue about
supports Brewer and says there is a need for black feminism
- black feminists have actively challenged the dominant image of black women as passive victims of racism, patriarchy and social class inequality
evaluation of Mirza
many ethnic minority women continue to experience inequalities and pressure from families so not all women have developed the confidence to be brave proud and strong
what does Connell argue?
stresses the importance of developing perspectives that challenge the dominance of Western feminism because most women live in the majority world of the southern continents
evaluation of Connell
overemphasis on the importance of colonialism rather than gender inequality
