Vietnam BK
A
- The US increased the number of Special Advisers in South Vietnam under Kennedy’s presidency by over 11,000 by the end of 1962. The aim was to protect South Vietnam from the spread of communism from the North.
- January 1973 US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger negotiated a withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam in the Paris peace talks with his North Vietnamese counterpart Le Duc Tho. This signaled America’s defeat.

USSR’S POLICY BK
A
- Between 1945-48 USSR established a series of communists governments in Eastern Europe and imposed tight economic and political control over them.
- In Feb 1956 Khrushchev gave his so-called secret speech in which he criticized Stalin, who had died in 1953, and stated that “there were many roads to socialism.” This led many in Eastern Europe to hope for reform.

- Photographic evidence of soviet nuclear missile launch sites in Cuba. (14 OCT 1962) U2 Spy plane.
- The world was on the brink of nuclear war with Kennedy’s advisers urging military action against the USSR. This standoff only ended on the 28th of October.

Liberal Reforms
A
- The view prior to 1906 was that “self-help”, preached by Samuel Smiles, in addition to a laissez-faire attitude of previous governments.
- However, this changed under Hugh Campbell-Bannerman and Herbert Asquith between 1906 and 1914 when the liberal government introduced a series of social reforms.
