What happens
The narrator and curate observe the martians, growing tension between them which frequently escalated to violence. Narrator tries to maintain a pragmatic response to the situation where as the curate becomes increasingly irrational as he loses faith. Curate resists all of the narrators attempts to ration the limited food supply.

He cant even face the narrator let alone god, this illustrates how the narrator believes his companion is spineless, clear he is unfit for survival especially since he can’t grasp the concept of rationing the food. Becomes feeble and useless as he watches the martians feeding ritual. Curate becomes a danger as they must act secretly to survive
Why has wells chosen the curate to be weak
Chooses to portray the worst of humanity in the form of a religious figure allowing him to critique religious institutions and their resistance to progression.

Continues the phycological narrative to provide detail about the martians and reminds the reader of the external battle outside the house as he hears the gunfire, assumes this gunfire is humans killing them human arrogance
