Narrator forced to deal with the curate , who almost becomes nemesis , illustrating the martians pitting humans gains teach other
Although he dislike the curate he alerts the narrator after he passes out to be quiet, Wells casts companionship in this case to be useful when it comes to survival
What’s scary that the martians are doing now
Realisation the martians have another purpose than just destruction is deeply unsettling since the narrator has already come to terms with the idea the martians want to destroy everything. They could have plans for humanity worse than death, which proves their intelligence. The though of this emphasises the mystery of how clueless humans are about their future

If they meet under different circumstances their dislike may not be as strong as the curate would be less prone to wailing about his hopelessness, the martians invasion has brought out the worst in him. Most stay with each other even due to their conflicting views on religion, the unknown and survival
