- laid in damp marshy groud or decaying vegetation near water
- eggs may over winter
- L1-L4 in water

- transmit:
- parasites (causing ureitis, dermatitis)
- viruses - African horse sickness, Blue tongue virus, Schmallenberg virus
- Sweet itch in horses and donkeys
