-industrial decline led to high rates of unemployment
-racial tensions created by newly settled migrants have caused race riots
-employment inequality for migrants. Migrants in the inner city such as sparkbrook have far lower chance of being employed
-newly arrived migrants usually settle in in the same area creating social separation. Also creates a language barrier.
-clear health inequality. Four oaks have life expectancy off 84 whereas sparkbrook has 76.

- 5 unis which educate 50,000 students
-green city with 500 parks and more trees then any city in Europe
-HSBC HQ creates 20,000 jobs.
-cultural diversity creates opportunities such as shared language, culture and food. Eg the balti triangle.
-recreational facilities such as symphony hall and award winning library.
-Good internal and national transport links such as the midland metro
Redevelopment
Big city plan.
-£600 million revamp off new street station to create world class shopping centre (grand central).
-1000 new jobs and increase rail capacity to 300,000 passengers per day.
-materials used were largely recycled and rain water is collected to flush toilets to make he redevelopment more sustainable.
