Mania

What it is?
Criteria for DSM-5

A

Extreme euphoria ( extremely happy, elated, increased energy)

  1. Inflated self esteem or grandiosity ( grandiose delusion, persecutory delusion- someone is out to get them)
  2. Decreased need for sleep
  3. Pressured Sleep ( person keeps talking and talking )
  4. FLIGHT OF IDEAS= racing thoughts ( when they jump form one topic to the next )
  5. Increasing goal-directed activity ( work, school, heypersexuality )
  6. Excessive involvement in unsafe activities ( sex, drugs, driving fast )

Bipolar 1 Disorder

A

** Has EXTREME MANIA + SEVERE DEPRESSION **
- full syndrome of manic symptoms
- psychosis is possible
- HIGH RISK FOR SUICIDE

** Has SEVERE DEPRESSION + HYPOMANIA **
- Has never met criteria for full manic episode

A

Lithium expected side effects + therapeutic range

A

Expected Side effects:
-drowsiness, HA, dry mouth, polydipsia, fine hand tremors, polyuria, weight gain

Therapeutic range: 0.6-1.2
- monitor levels 1-2x a week till stable then monthly

Lithium toxicity levels

A

Early sx at 1.5-2= coarse hand tremors
2-2.5= Patient must be hospitalized
>2.5= death, pt will likely need hemodialysis
