- Bipolar I

What is the diagnostic criteria for Bipolar I Disorder?
- Must meet criteria for manic episode
- Must be preceded by hypomanic or major depressive episode
- Manic episode can be followed by hypomanic or major depressive episode
What is Bipolar II Disorder?
- Must meet criteria for current or past hypomanic episode
- Must meet criteria for current or past major depressive episode
- There must not have ever been a manic episode
What is the diagnostic criteria for Cyclothymic Disorder?
- Hypomanic symtoms not meeting criteria for episode
- Numerous depressive symptoms that do not meet criteria for at least 2 years (1 year in children)
- Hypomanic symptoms present for at least half the time
What is the diagnostic criteria for Mixed Features Bipolar?
- Simultaneous occurrence of manic and depressive symptoms
- More common in younger and older patients
- More common in females
- Fluctuating clinical presentation
What are some disorders to rule out when diagnosing Bipolar Disorder?
- Anxiety Disorder
- OCD
- Alcohol/substance abuse
- Personality disorders
What is the essential feature of Bipolar Disorder?
Mania or hypomania that is not caused by any other medical condition, substance, or psychiatric disorder
What diagnostic feature is essential in order to make a diagnosis of Bipolar I, Bipolar II, or Cyclothymic Disorder?

What is the distinguishing factor from Bipolar Disorder and Schizoaffective Disorder?
Patients with schizoaffective disorder experience psychosis even between mood episodes during period of euthymia
