- Type 1: manic episodes which are severe and result in impaired functioning and frequent admission
- Type 2: hypomanic, interspersed with depressive episodes

A
- Strong genetic link
- Type 1 more common in males and type 2 more common in females

A
- Manic phase: grandiose idea, pressure of speech, excessive energy, racing thoughts, overactivity…
- Hypomanic phase: elevated mood and energy, no hallucinations or delusions
- Depressive phase

A
- Two episodes in which mood and activity are significantly disturbed
- One of which must be mania or hypomania

A
- Hyper/hypothyroidism
- Cerebrovascular event
- Dementia

Bipolar Disorder Management
A
If manic
- Liaise with consultant
- Antipsychotic
- Then add lithium
- SSRIs may aggravate mania
- Can also use valproate
- Lamotrigine for depression
- Carbemazepine for rapid cycling
