Define manic episode
A distinct period of abnormal and persistent elevated expansive or irritable mood lasting at least 1 week
Hypomania
3 symptoms of mania lasting for 4 days. Doesn’t cause any disruption in functionality but must be observed by others
What is the characteristics for rapid cycling in bipolar disorder?
4 or more cycles of mania and depression in one year
Priority of bipolar
Safety, nutrition, no demands, no punishment, no responsibility
Three organ systems affected by lithium
Thyroid: hypothyroidism, kidneys: decreased concentration ability, and nervous system: tremor and decreased motor coordination
A client with bipolar disorder has been receiving lithium for 2 weeks. What are signs that indicate lithium toxicity?
hypotonic reflexes with muscles weakness, fever, confusion, decreased BP, decreased urine output, irregular pulse

Increased appetite. Manic clients are usually unwilling or unable to slow down enough to eat
What communication guidelines should a nurse use when talking with a manic client?
Focus and redirect the conversation as necessary. This decreases stimulation.

Monitor for gag reflex. ETC can reduce gag reflex.
What are some adverse effects of Electroconvulsive therapy?
Respiratory arrest and short term memory loss
