mania
distinct, abnormal, elevated, expansive (or irritable mood) for 7 days minimum. at least 3 additional symptoms must be present for 7 days.
additional symptoms of mania
increased self-esteem/grandiosity, decreased sleep, increased speech, racing thoughts, distractibility, increased activity, increased dangerous impulsivity.
what does DTRHIGH stand for?
this is the nemonic for diagnosing mania: distractible, talkative, racing thoughts, hyperactive, impulsive, grandiose, hyposomnic.
hypomania
milder form of mania, lasts for 4 days or more, with similar symptoms as mania. not severe enough to cause marked impairment. this must be clearly noted by others.
major depressive episode.
pervasive, sad, down, irritable mood for more than 2 weeks.
dysthymic
a milder form of depression.
manic episode
elevated, expansive, or irritable mood including three other symptoms.
hypomanic episode
less severe and shorter duration than manic.
mixed episode
shows features of both manic and depressive episode.
bipolar 1
mania + MDE. MUST HAVE MANIA. do not have to have depressive disorder.
bipolar 2
hypomania + MDE. MUST HAVE HYPOMANIA, not necessarily involved with the MDE.
cyclothymic
minor depression with Hypomania for >2 years. increased sexual activity, increased seductive/flashy dress, increased anger and escalation, increased energy (able to do more, think outside of the box, be more creative, take chances). there is a risk of psychosis with delusions, hallucinations and thought disorder.
