Biotic Interactions Flashcards
Types of biotic interactions
Competition, mutualism, predation, and facilitation.
Mutualism example
Oak and arbuscular fungi
Facilitation example
Sphagnum moss facilitates peat formation
Predation example
Red fox kills and eats a rabbit.
Competition example
Marram grass (Ammophilia arenaria) and fescue grass (fescus rubra)
Mutualism
Symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit
Facilitation
One species positively affects another without interaction
Predation
An interaction where one organsim kills and consumes another.
Competition
A relationship where two or more species compete for the same limited resource.
Herbivory
Animals eat parts of a plant, not always linked to killing the plant.
Red fox
Vulpes vulpes
European rabbit
Oryctolagus cuniculus
Coupled oscillation
Cyclic population changes where prey populations increase, causing predator numbers to rise, and then fall after prey population in depleted.
Example for coupled oscillations
Stoat and Irish hare (Musleta erminea and lepus hibernicus)
Peregrine falcon
Falco peregrinus
Pike
Esox lucius
Roach
Rutilus rutilus
European wolf
Canis lupus
Herring gulls
Larus argentatus
Shore crabs (Invasive)
Carcinus maenas
