Biosphere Flashcards
What are ecosystems?
A community of living and non-living things that interact in the habitat where they live
What is the name for living parts of ecosystems?
Biotic (factors)
What is the name for non-living parts of ecosystems?
Abiotic
What is a biome?
A global sized ecosystem
What is a temperate climate?
A climate with mild temperatures
What does Abscission mean?
The natural detachment of a plant
What is the biosphere?
The worldwide sum of all ecosystems
What are the 8 main biomes?
Tundra (Arctic and Alpine)
Taiga (Boreal/Coniferous Forest)
Temperate Deciduous Forest
Tropical Rainforest
Desert (Hot and Cold)
Mediterranean (Chaparral)
Tropical Grassland
Temperate Grassland
What is the tropical rainforest biome?
Dense forest with high rainfall
What is the grassland biome?
Large, open area covered with grass
What is the desert biome?
Dry open space with few plants
What does deciduous mean?
Forests with trees that lose their leaves
What is the tundra?
A vast, cold, treeless environment
What is the coniferous forest biome?
Dense forest with high rainfall
What is the chaparral biome?
Dense forest with tangled undergrowth
What does savannah mean?
A grassy plain with very few trees
What is the alpine biome?
A cold, high altitude place that is mountainous
What are food webs?
Interlinked food chains
What are food chains?
a series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food
What is an open system?
A system that doesn’t repeat and only occurs once
What is a closed system?
A system that repeats itself
What are carnivores?
Animals that eat meat
What is a herbivore?
An herbivore is an organism that mostly feeds on plants
What are consumers?
Organisms that have to eat other organisms to get energy
What are producers?
Animals that produce their own energy
What are tropic levels?
The position of an organism in the food chain
What are decomposers?
Decomposers are organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms
What is Desertification?
It is when people attempt to increase how much desert space we have
What is deforestation?
Trying to reduce how much forest space we have
What is the nutrient cycle?
The process that encompasses the movement of nutrients from the physical environment to living organisms and back to the environment
