biosphere Flashcards
symbiosis
living together
mutualism
both animals benefit
Ex: a small fish cleans the teeth of a large fish
commensalism
one benefits and the other is unaffected
Ex: a bird builds a nest in a tree
Parasitism
one benefits and the other is harmed
Ex: a tick on a dog
Predation
eats and kills prey
[is not a symbiotic relationship.]
Limiting factors
things that limit the growth of a population and may cause it to decrease.
It includes competitions in pursuit of water, food, space, shelter, etc.
More include rainfall, light, temperature, predators, and disease.
Biomes
major {land} defined by climate {and plants and animals} 9-20
Ex: tropical rainforest
ky. Temperature forest /deciduous forest
Taiga/boreal forest
Desert
Tundra
Grassland
Savannah
*freshwater
*marine [ocean]
Invasive species
An organism that is not native to the natural environment and has invaded
Ecological succession
the progress in which ecosystems change and develop over time
Primary succession
organisms move into an area where no life previously existed
ex: a lava rock where a glacier used to be
secondary succession
ecosystems grow and change in an area where there are living things
ex: after a forest fire
