Biopsychology- function of the endocrine system Flashcards
What is the alternative name to the endocrine system?
Hormonal system
What is the role of the endocrine system?
Communicates messages to organs of the body (similar to neurones)
What is the endocrine system composed of ?
A series of glands which release chemical throughout the body via the blood + other bodily fluids
What are the specialist glands in the body?
Pituitary gland (‘master gland’)
Adernal gland
Ovaries
Testies
What is the function of the pituitary gland?
Some of hormones released are important for regulating the endocrine system
What is the function of the adrenal gland?
An important part of the ‘fight or flight’ response as it facilitates the release of adrenaline
What is the function of the testies?
Facilitates the release of testosterone (male sex hormone)
What is the function of the ovaries/
facilitates the release of oestrogen + progesterone (female sex hormones)
explain what hormones are said to influence
Behaviour- each hormone is thought to affect behaviour in a different way
Explain an example of a hormone released by the pituitary gland. What is its job?
Oxytocin - said to be important for reproductive behaviour. Released following an orgasm, which aids conception and elects a feeling of relaxation and calm
What did Kosfeld et al find in 2005?
High levels of oxytocin encourages strong bonding between couples. More you fall in love the higher the release of oxytocin
Throughout research what is oxytocin said to be profound in?
Reproduction
Forming relationships
Mother/ child bonding
