Biopsychology- divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
What is the human nervous system divided into?
Central Nervous System
Peripheral Nervous System
What is the central nervous system composed of ?
Brain + spinal cord
What is the job of the CNS?
Maintain life
involved in psychological processes
What are the brain parts concerning?
Primitive -> vital functioning e.g breathing
High order thinking -> e.g problem solving
What does the spinal cord attach too?
Brain
What is the job of the spinal cord?
Facilitates the transferal of messages to + from the brain and PNS
Reflex actions in fight or flight
What does the peripheral nervous system do?
Transmits messages to whole body from brain + vice versa
What does the PNS divide into?
Autonomic system
Somatic system
What is the job of the somatic system ?
Transmits + receives messages from the senses e.g visual info from eye + auditory from ears
Direct muscles to react + move
What is the job of the autonomic system?
Helps transmit + receive info from the organs
Involved in fight or flight
What 2 systems is the autonomic system divided into?
Sympathetic system
Parasympathetic system
Explain the functions of the two systems involved in the autonomic system
SYMPATHETIC -> increases activity + prepares body for action e.g heart rate increases, eye dilate ‘Flight or flight’
PARASYMPATHETIC -> conserves the body’s natural activity level by decreasing activity / maintaining it ‘Rest or digest’
