Biopsychology- function of the endocrine system Flashcards
what is the endocrine system?
-One of our body’s major information systems that instructs glands to release hormones into the bloodstream.
- the hormones are carried through the bloodstream to the targeted organs in the body.
What is a gland ?
An organ in the body that synthesises substances such as hormones.
what are hormones ?
chemical substances that circulate in the bloodstream and only effect targeted organs.
- produced in large quantities but disappear quickly
what is the process of the release of hormones from endocrine glands in the endocrine system ?
- The endocrine gland secretes hormones into the bloodstream due to a signal from the brain.
2.Hormones travel to their target cells and stimulate receptors on the surface/inside these cells. - the presence of the hormone causes a reaction in the cell which alters its activity.
- Each hormone effects behaviour in different ways.
what is the functions of the adrenal gland ?
releases adrenaline into the bloodstream when in fight or flight mode.
what is the function of the testes ?
releases testosterone (male hormone)
what is the function of the ovaries ?
releases oestrogen and progesterone ( female hormones)
