Biopsychology: Divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
Define the nervous system:
Consists of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Communicates through electrical signals.
What are the two branches from the nervous system?
- Central nervous system
- Peripheral nervous system
Define the central nervous system:
Consists of the brain and spinal cord. Is the origin of all complex commands and decisions.
What is the role of the peripheral nervous system?
Sends information to the CNS from the outside world. Transmits messages from the CNS to the muscles and glands in the body.
What are the two branches from the central nervous system?
- Brain
- Spinal cord
What are the two branches from the peripheral nervous system?
- Somatic nervous system
- Autonomic nervous system
What is the role of the somatic nervous system?
Transmits information from receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS. Receives information from the CNS that directs muscles to act.
What is the role of the autonomic nervous system?
Transmits information to and from internal body organs. System is involuntary and branches into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
What is the role of the sympathetic nervous system?
Transmits information that causes our body to be in an alert and stressed state.
What is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system?
Transmits information that causes our bodies to return to its normal and relaxed state.
