What is the nervous
system?
Primary internal communication system. Collect, process and respond to environmental information. Coordinate function of organs and cells in the body.
What is the central nervous system?
Made up of brain and spinal cord. Made up of brain and spinal chord.
What is the brain?
Centre of conscious awareness. Cerebral Cortex is the outer layer. Brain is what distinguishes higher mental functions.
What is the spinal cord?
Extension of the brain. Connects nerves to the Peripheral nervous system . Responsible for reflexes.
What is peripheral nervous system?
Transfers messages to and from central nervous system. It is further subdivided into the somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system.
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Governs involuntary body functions such as breathing, digestion, heart rate, stress response and sexual arousal.
What is the somatic nervous system?
Governs voluntary body functions such as muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors.
