Biopsychology Definitions Flashcards
Define Endocrine System
one of the bodies major information systems that instructs glands to release hormones directly into the blood stream. These hormones are carried towards target organs
Define Gland
An organ in the body that synthesises (makes) substances eg hormones
Define hormones
chemicals that circulate in the bloodstream and only affect target organs. They are produced in large quantities but dissapear quickly. Their effects are very powerful.
Define Adrenaline
A hormone produced by the adrenal gland which is a part of the bodies immediate stress responce system. Has a Strong affect on the cardiovascular system eg. Stimulating heart-rate.
Define fight or flight responce
The way an anima responds when stressed The body becomes physiologically aroused in readiness to fight or flee an agressor
Define nervous system
consists of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
Define central nervous system
consists ofthe brain and spinal cord andis the origin of all complex commando and decisions it passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the PNS
Define brain
Thecenter of all concious awareness. The cerebral cortex is highly developed in humans and is what distinguished out higher mental functions from those of animals It is divided into two hemespheres.
Define spinal cord
An extention of the brain. It is responsible for reflex actions such as pulling your hand away from a hot plate
Define peripheral nervous system
sends information to the CNS from the outside and transmits messages from the CNS to muscles and glands in the body it does this via millions of neurons and is divided into the ANS and SNS
