Biopsychology Flashcards
What is the central nervous system?
Consists of the brain and spine
Receives info from senses and controls the body’s responses
What is the spinal chord?
A bundle of nerve fibers connecting the brain and body
What is the peripheral nervous system?
The part of the nervous system outside outside of the brain and spinal chord which consists of the somatic NS and autonomic NS
What does the autonomic NS do?
Controls involuntary actions of non-skeletal muscles and internal bodily systems
Consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic
E.g of internal bodily system controlled by autonomic NS?
Heart & circulatory system
Lungs & breathing
Digestion
What are the main functions of the CNS?
Control of behaviour
Regulation of our bodys physiological processes
How does the CNS operate?
The brain receives info from the bodys sensory receptors and send messages to muscles and glands
What are the bodys sensory receptors?
Skin, eyes, ears,
What is the spinal chords main function?
Relay information between the brain and rest of the body and enables the brain to monitor and regulate internal bodily processes
What are the four main areas of the brain?
cerebellum , cerebrum, diencephalon, brain stem
What does the brain stem do?
Responsible for regulating automatic functions essential for life by motor & sensory neurons traveling throught the brain stem that allows impulses to pass between the brain & spinal chord
