Biopsychology Flashcards
What are the main assumptions of Biopsychology ?
Assumes that behaviour and experiences are caused by the activity in the nervous system
What are the two functions of the nervous system ?
- To collect, process and respond to information in the environment
- To co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells
What is the Central Nervous System ?
The CNS is made up of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is the center of all consciousness and has a highly developed cerebral cortex.
What is the Cerebrum responsible for ?
In charge of sensing, thinking and imagining
What is the Cerebellum responsible for ?
Motion, balance and learning new things
What is the Medulla responsible for ?
Brainstem, controls involuntary actions
What does the Peripheral Nervous System consist of ?
(Sensory nerves)-Receives information
What does the Somatic Nervous System consist of ?
(Motor nerves)-Sends information
What does the Autonomic Nervous System do ?
Governs vital functions in the body
What is the Sympathetic Nervous System?
The first division of the autonomic nervous system is the sympathetic nervous system. This division is activated when the body is put under a lot of stress and its function is to ensure survival by decreasing focus on lesser bodily functions and shifting focus to the muscles. The SNS is essentially performance mode.
What is the Parasympathetic Nervous System?
The parasympathetic nervous system does the exact opposite of the the sympathetic state
What kind of system are the Para/sympathetic Nervous
System?
Antagnostic
Define Antagnostic
Counteracts/Opposes the action of the other to regulate
What is the Endocrine System?
The endocrine system consists of a number of glands that releases hormones
Is in charge of body processes that happen slowly such as cell growth
