Biopsychology Flashcards
Name the lobes of the brain
Frontal lobe
Temporal lobe
Parietal lobe
Occipital lobe
Where is Broca’s area located?
Lower part of left frontal lobe
Where is wernicke’s area located?
Top part of left temporal lobe
What is decussation?
Crossing over of motor nerves (left side of brain effects right side of body)
What is Broca’s area?
Broca a French physician in 1861 published a case study of a patient with language impairment and could only say the word ‘tan’ yet could understand language. Problem now called Broca’s aphasia.
What area is responsible for a speech production?
Autopsy of broca’s patient showed area of damage in lower part of left frontal lobe- means that this area is responsible for speech production
What is Wernicke’s area?
In 1874 Wernicke reported about patients suffering from a language disorder now called Wernicke’s aphasia. These patients could speak fluently but what they said had little/nothing to do with conversation + little understanding of words
What area is responsible for speech comprehension?
In Wernicke’s patient autopsies showed damage to top part of left temporal lobe this means that this area is responsible for speech production + contains a store of words.
