Biomolecules - Water Flashcards
To understand the importance of water.
What are the different states of water? (3)
Liquid, Gas, Solid
Why is water polar? (1)
The electrons of the polar covalent bonds are more drawn to the oxygen atom than the hydrogen atoms.
What is the shape of water and why? (2)
Bent, as the overall charge is distributed unevenly.
What type of bonding are formed between water molecules and how strong are they? (2)
Hydrogen bonding is formed between the molecules and the bonds are weak.
Which properties of water are key for life? (8)
Their cohesive behavior (helps with transport),
Ability to moderate temperature (able to absorb & release heat while unaffecting its own)
Expansion upon freezing (ice = less dense than water, therefore preventing all water from freezing)
Versatility as a solvent (is THE biological solvent)
What is a solution? (1)
A liquid that is a completely homogeneous mixture of substances.
What is a solvent (1)
Is the dissolving agent of a solution.
What is a solute (1)
The substance that is dissolved.
What is a aqueous solution (1)
A solution where water is the solvent.
What is an hydration shell? (1)
It occurs when the ions from another molecule is surrounded by a sphere of water molecules.
Meaning of hydrophilic (1)
Has an affinity for water.
Meaning of hydrophobic (1)
Does not have an affinity for water.
What type of molecule is the major ingredient o cell membranes?
Hydrophobic molecules (oils & fats)
