Biomolecules - CHO & Lipids Flashcards
To recognise the 4 types of biological molecules, describe how polymers are formed and broken down.
The four most abundant elements (4)
Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen
The four types of macromolecules (4)
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Nucleic Acids, Proteins
What is a polymer? (1)
A long molecule with similar building blocks.
What are monomers? (1)
Repeating units that are seen as “building blocks”
What are a few of the different types of carbon skeleton shapes? (4)
Chains, Cyclo-, Branches, Organic Chemistry (ie Benzene)
Name three types of organic molecules that are polymers. (3)
Carbohydrates, Proteins, Nucleic acids
What is a dehydration reaction? (1)
When two monomers bond and release another small molecule (water)
What is a hydrolysis reaction? (1)
Small molecule (water) added to create two monomers
