Biomes- Lesson 2 Flashcards
Learning what biomes are, the different types of biomes, the difference between weather and climate, and the reason for seasons
What are biomes?
Large areas with similar climate and biological communities
What exist within biomes?
Ecosystems
What are the 3 lines of latitude?
The Tropic of Cancer, the Equator, and the Tropic of Capricorn
Tropical Rainforest Biome- What is the weather like? What are the 3 tropical rainforests? What is the environmental threats for each tropical rainforest? What types of animals are found in this biome?
The weather is always how and humid due to the rain, there is minimal seasonality.
The 3 tropical rainforests are the Amazon, Congo, and the tropical rainforest of South East Asia
The environmental threats include:
Amazon- deforestation for agriculture
Congo- deforestation for mining
South East Asia- Most impacted deforestation for human activity, cities, and agriculture
Animals- Orangutan, Birds of paradise, Sumatra Tiger
Tropical Grassland Biome- What is the weather like? What are the 2 tropical grasslands? What is the environmental threats? What types of animals are found in this biome?
The weather is hot and dry all year round except for 1 wet season, little precipitation(rain)
2 largest tropical grassland biomes is the African savanna and South American Cerrado
The environmental threats include:
Agriculture and converting grassland into farms
Animals- Haisans Macaos, Lions and hyenas
Dessert Biome-What is the weather like? What are the 2 types of desserts and which desserts are there? What is the environmental threats? What types of animals are found in this biome?
The weather is hot and dry little to no precipitation
The 2 types of desserts are:
hot and dry
cold desserts (Antartica)
The Sahara dessert
Great Sandi Dessert
Atacama dessert
Kobe dessert
Environmental Impacts:
No issues it cannot support human life
Desserts are growing- Desertification
Animals- Road runner, Bobcat, dessert owl
Chaparral Biome-What is the weather like? Where are they located? What is the environmental threats? What types of animals are found in this biome?
There are dry summers and relatively wet winters
Located at the eastern margins of ocean bases
Central California, Central Chile, East Asia
Think San Francisco Bay Area
Environmental Issues:
Human development
Expansion of desserts in chaparrals
Animals-bobcat
Temperate Grasslands Biome-What is the weather like? Where are they located? What is the environmental threats? What types of animals are found in this biome?
The weather is moderate but insufficient precipitation to support many trees.Hot wt summers and cold dry winters
Found at the mid-latitudes. The Pampas and the Steppe
Environmental Issues:
Agriculture the entirety of it
Animals- American Bisson
Temperate Deciduous Forest Biome-What is the weather like? Where are they located? What is the environmental threats? What types of animals are found in this biome?
The weather includes cold wet winters and hot humid summer- rains throughout the year
East Asia, and East America
Environmental Threats:
Human civilization (industrialized)
Animals- Long eared owl
Coniferous Forest Biome-What is the weather like? Where are they located? What is the environmental threats? What types of animals are found in this biome?
The weather includes cold wet winters and mild summers
Largest biome on earth- Boreal Forest
Environmental Impacts-
logging
Animals-grizzly bear, bald eagle
Tundra biome-What is the weather like? Where are they located? What is the environmental threats? What types of animals are found in this biome?
The weather is cold and dry all year round which created permafrost
Arctic Tundra
Environmental Issues:
permafrost is melting
boreal trees are starting to seep-through therefore the tundra biome is shrinking
Animals- polar bears, great snowy owls, arctic wolves
What are the 2 factors that drive climates?
Seasonal distribution and Atmospheric circulation
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is the condition of the atmosphere today and climate is how the atmosphere or weather across a long period of time. Key factor= time
Seasonality of climate increases with__________
Latitude
Based on the tilt of the earth it determines the amount of ___ _____ we receive
sun energy
What is the primary driver of global climate gradients?
the angle of incoming radiant energy relative to Earths surface
Distribution of incoming solar radiation drives atmospheric circulation and latitudinal distribution of climate. What are the 3 cells that contribute to this?
Habley cell, Ferrec cell, and Polar cell
