Biomes and Tropical Rainforests Flashcards
What is a biome?
A large geographical area characterized by its climate, vegetation, soil, and wildlife
Name the 6 biomes.
Tropical Rainforest, Temperate forest, Taiga, Tundra, Savannah, Desert
Give one plant and animal adaptation for each of the biomes.
Ex: Lichens, small shrubs and polar bears
Where do we find the tropical rainforest?
10° South and North
Why do we find tropical rain forests here?
Tropical rainforests are found near the equator due to the amount of rainfall and the amount of sunshine these areas receive.
What is a climate graph?
A climate graph displays yearly temperature and precipitation statistics for a particular location.
How is temperature shown on a climate graph?
Temperature is shown as a line
How is precipitation shown on a climate graph?
Precipitation is shown as a bar
What is the climate of the tropical rainforest?
Tropical rain forests are warm areas that receive a great deal of rainfall.
Who are indigenous people?
People who are settled in that area first
Who are transnational companies?
A transnational company is an enterprise that is involved with the international production of goods or services, foreign investments, or income and asset management in more than one country
What do indigenous people do with the ARF?
Most Indians live in settled villages by the rivers, and grow vegetables and fruits like manioc, corn, beans and bananas. They also hunt and fish, using plant-based poisons to stun the fish
What do TNCs do with the ARF?
They cut down trees and make useful objects out of the timber. This leads to deforestation but the TNCs earn more money
Name a positive impact of deforestation.
Increase of space/land
Materials can be made out of it
Sell for money
Name a negative impact of deforestation.
Less oxygen
More greenhouse gas
Less habitat for animals and indigenous people
What does sustainability mean?
Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
Name and explain the four methods of sustainably managing the tropical rainforest
- Protect areas which contain tropical rainforests (e.g., national parks and biosphere reserves)
- Regulate forestry activities (e.g., controlled logging)
- Rehabilitate disturbed areas with tropical rainforests (e.g., reforestation)
- Promote public education (e.g., guided nature walks)
What is the difference between deciduous and coniferous trees
The deciduous trees have leaves that fall off yearly. Coniferous trees bear cones and have needles or scales that do not fall off.
