Biomes Flashcards
What are the climatic and vegetative features a Tropical Ranforest?
Hot and wet all year round. 25 C to 30 C, average annual precipitation is 200-3000mm.
Dense forests with several layers.
What are the climatic and vegetative features of a Savanna (Tropical Grasslands)?
Hot all year round with temperatures between 25 C and 35 C. There is an average of 500-1000 mm annual precipitation, there is always a dry season.
Tall grasses with drought adapted vegetation.
What are the climatic and vegetative features of a Desert?
Hot all year round with temperatures over 30 C. There is a large diurnal temperature range. Low precipitation rates, less than 250 mm per year.
Low amounts of vegetation, water storing plants.
What are the climatic and vegetative features of a Temperate Grassland?
Hot in summer, 25 C. Cold in winter, as low as -40 C. Precipitation levels high during late spring and summer, 500-900 mm average per year.
Short grass with little trees and bushes.
What are the climatic and vegetative features of a Temperate Forest?
Temperatures reaching 18 C during summer, warm. 5 C during winter, cool. Precipitation all year round, 1000 mm.
Deciduous trees
What are the climatic and vegetative features of a Boreal Forest?
Summers reach temperatures of 10 - 20 C and winters are very cold at less than 0 C. Low precipitation at 500 mm usually in summer.
Coniferous Trees.
What are the climatic and vegetative features of a Tundra?
Temperatures reach 10 C during the summer but they stay below 0 C for most of the year. Precipitation less than 250 mm. Short daylight hours in winter.
Very few plants, mostly lichens and mosses.
