1GB2 4c.1 - Lyme Regis and the Cobb Flashcards
Define the term hydrosphere.
All the water on the Earth’s surface e.g. lakes, rivers, seas. Including water over the surface such as cloud.
Define the term biosphere.
Regions on the earth that are occupied by living organisms. It is a mixture of natural vegetation e.g. meadow and woodlands.
What is a “lithosphere”?
It is the rigid outer part of the Earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantle.
Define the term anthroposphere.
It is the part of the environment that is made/modified by humans for use in human activities and human habitats.
Define the term atmosphere.
The envelope of gases surrounding the Earth.
What are the economic impacts of rising sea levels in Lyme Regis?
Rising sea levels require more coastal management. This results in funding ring needed from the local council, which will have to be provided from the residents.
How much average annual rainfall is there?
What does this cause?
(Physical geography)
Average annual rainfall exceeds 850mm and adds to sub aerial stresses on sea cliffs.
Why does the town have an ideal land slip surface?
Physical geography
The town lays upon actively unstable soft clays and sands that have poor drainage. Underlying beds of shales and limestones are stronger and dip towards the sea.
What is the town’s population and where do they live?
How does this change in the summer?
(Human geography)
There is a resident population of 5,000 people who live mostly within 1km of the coastline.
The population increases to 15,000 at peak of summer; which shows how dependant the town’s economy is on tourism.
What has development replaced natural vegetation with?
Human geography
Natural vegetation has been replaced with impermeable surfaces such as concrete/tarmac which increase surface run off.
What has the reactivation of the land slip system led to?
It has led to slow downslope movement of up to 1km inland. Occasional landslide events have led to major damage or loss in property and infrastructure.
The increase in which two things has led to major risk/significant stresses in regards to the coastal defences and geology?
Increase in marine erosion with sea level rise and storm surge frequency - poses major risk to stability of defences.
Increased urbanisation and development - along with increased national tourism has added significant stresses to geology and drainage systems.
Where in the UK is Lyme Regis located?
The town is located in west Dorset on the South Coast.
