Biomes Flashcards
What are the 3 components of the biosphere
Atmosphere
Lithosphere
Hydrosphere
What is a biosphere?
All parts of the earth where living organisms occur
What is an atmosphere?
Layer of air surrounding the earth and consists of a various mixture of gases
What is the function of the atmosphere?
It protects from UV radiation by absorbing the harmful rays from the sun from reaching the earth surface which can cause skin cancer
What is lithosphere
Soil and rocks comprising the outer layer of the earth
What is the function of lithosphere?
It is the coolest of all spheres.
It is a habitat for life.
It stores important resources like minerals, fossil fuels and gold that are extracted and used by humans.
What is hydrosphere?
It includes all the water on the surface of the earth
What is the biggest sphere?
Hydrosphere which consists of 75% of the earth surface
What is the function of the hydrosphere?
It is a habitat for life.
Supports life by providing essential things like freshwater for humans
It regulates earth temperature by condensation, evaporation and precipitation
What is a biome?
Any area in a particular climate, together with the living organisms occuring in that area
What is are the two types of biomes?
Terrestrial biomes and aquatic biomes
What are the characteristics determining a biome?
The soil type
Animal life
Vegetation
Climate
How is a biome named?
By the dominant type of vegetation in that area
What is the importance of biomes?
It supports biodiversity by when each type type of biome supports different vegetations and animal life.
It acts as a habitat for different living organisms
List the different types of terrestrial biomes.
Succulent Karoo
Savannah biome
Nama Karoo
Fynbos
Thicker biome
Grassland biome
Thicket biome
Forest biome
