Biomes Flashcards
This biome’s dense and warm regions occur in this biome’s namesake climate where there is no dry season – all months have an average precipitation of at least 60 mm. True regions of these are typically found between 10 degrees north and south of the equator; they are a subset of the tropical forest biome that occurs roughly within the 28-degree latitudes (in the equatorial zone between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn). These biomes are a type of moist broadleaf forest, that includes the more extensive seasonal of these biomes. Countries that have this biome include Brazil, DRC, Indonesia, Peru, and Columbia.
Rainforest
In physical geography, this biome is a type of biome where tree growth is hindered by frigid temperatures and short growing seasons. The term is a Russian word adapted from the Sámi language. There are three regions and associated types of this biome: Arctic this biome, alpine this biome, and Antarctic this biome. Some Countries that include this biome are Canada, the USA, Greenland/Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Mongolia, Japan, and China
Tundra
This biome is a forest of the cold, subarctic region. The subarctic is an area of the Northern Hemisphere that lies just south of the Arctic Circle. This biome lies between the tundra to the north and temperate forests to the south. Countries that contain this biome include the USA, Canada, Iceland, the UK, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Japan
Taiga
This biome is characterized by trees that lose their leaves at the end of each growing season. In some places, these woodlands include sugar maples in areas where lakes, rivers, and rugged terrain protect them from fire. At the prairie’s edge, where fires are common, oaks dominate. Forests of silver maple and cottonwood grow along moist river flood plains. In some places, scrubby bur oaks and aspen groves mingle with prairie. Countries with this biome include the USA, Canada, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Turkey, Iran, India, China, Russia, North and South Korea, and Japan
Deciduous Forest
In this biome, scrubland plant communities are composed of broad-leaved evergreen shrubs, bushes, and small trees usually less than 2.5 meters (about 8 feet) tall—the characteristic vegetation of coastal and inland mountain areas of southwestern North America. Countries that contain this biome include the USA and Mexico.
Chaparral
These biomes consist of large open areas of grass. Trees can be present, but they are infrequent. The animals found in this biome range from African elephants to various species of prairie dogs. Countries that host this biome include the USA, Canada, Ukraine, Russia, Mongolia, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, and South Africa
Grassland
These biomes are the driest of all the biomes. The most important characteristic of this biome is that it receives very little rainfall. Most of these biomes receive less than 300 mm a year compared to rainforests, which receive over 2,000 mm. Countries that host this biome are Mauritania, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrein, Greenland/Denmark.
Desert
This biome, also known as moist deciduous, semi-evergreen seasonal, tropical mixed, or monsoon forest, typically contains a range of tree species: only some of which drop some or all of their leaves during the dry season. Countries that contain this biome include Brazil, the DRC, Australia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mexico, Indonesia, Mali, and Columbia.
Tropical Seasonal Forest
These biomes include regions such as chaparral, woodland, and savannah. These biomes are the areas that are located in west coastal regions between 30° and 40° North and South latitudes. Some of the places would include southern California, Chile, Mexico, areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, and southwest parts of Africa and Australia. These regions are usually found surrounding deserts and grasslands.
Shrublands
The land around this biome is very flat. There is a lot of different vegetation covering this land. As well, many animals roam these biomes. The climate in these biomes is transitional. This means that the climate switches between dry periods and wet periods. The rainfall is also seasonal. Seasonal rainfall means that it only rains in a certain season. The land is very dry in winter because there is no rain. In the summer, it usually rains a lot.
