Biomes Flashcards
1
Q
Tundra: Abiotic
A
- Extremely cold temperatures
- Very little rain
- Long winters/short summers
- Snowy landscape (need for animals to be white)
2
Q
Tundra: Biotic
A
- Small plants can survive (moss, lichen, grass, shrubs) but NO trees
- Most animals are white (to blend in w/ snow)
- Animals hibernate during the winter (due to lack of food sources that can’t grow in
cold) - snowy owl, arctic fox, polar bear, caribou
3
Q
Taiga: Abiotic
A
- 2nd coldest biome (temperature) w/ very cold winters but slightly warmer/more
humid summers - Rainfall is heavier
- Winter is dry (snowy and cold)
- Summer is moist (warmer)
4
Q
Taiga: Biotic
A
- Conifer (evergreen) trees grow (since there is enough rainfall)
- Animals survive extreme cold and warmer summers (thick fur coats)
- Needles on trees to survive winters
- Animals hibernate
- Moose, bear, wolf, beaver, caribou
5
Q
Temperate Rainforest: Abiotic
A
- A lot of rainfall
- Temperature is mild but humid (summers/winters same temp)
- Rainfall washes away nutrients in soil
- Not a lot of sunlight
6
Q
Temperate Rainforest: Biotic
A
- Lots of plant growth due to rain (but only specific plants can really thrive due to rain
washing topsoil nutrients) - Moss, shrubs, and evergreen trees are common
- Bears, banana slug, spotted owl, lynx, wolf
7
Q
Deciduous Forest: Abiotic
A
- Clear seasons: cold winters, warm summers
- Moderate amount of rain
- Some sunlight
- Fertile soil
- Trees produce lots of OXYGEN
8
Q
Deciduous Forest: Biotic
A
- Food scare during winter so animals hibernate or travel south
- Plants dormant during winter and grow back in spring
- Leaves fall from trees in fall and decay, making soil richer
- Black bears, mountain lions, beaver, weasel, bobcat
9
Q
Tropical Rainforest: Abiotic
A
- Near equator so it is warm and rainy entire year (temp doesn’t vary)
- Little sunlight
- LOTS of rain
- Humidity
- Poor soil
10
Q
Tropical Rainforest: Biotic
A
- 50% of planet’s animal species in this biome
- Plants that can survive in very little sunlight
- Giant trees, vines, palms, ferns, and orchids
- Gorilla, giant anteater, jaguar, capybara, scarlet macaw
11
Q
Shrubland: Abiotic
A
- Moderate amount of rain (mostly during winter, summer is dry)
- Fires happen since summers are very dry and hot
- Not cold enough for snow but winters are slightly colder
- Nutrient-poor soil
12
Q
Shrubland: Biotic
A
- Animals that survive very hot summers
- Drought-resistant plants to survive dry summers
- Few trees, most plants are shrubs
- Yucca, Scrub Oak, Sagebrush
- Skunk, coyote, Jack rabbit
13
Q
Temperate Grassland: Abiotic
A
- Clear seasons: cold winters, hot summers
- Hot summers result in wildfires
- Biome is very dry (not a lot of rain)
- Very fertile soil and nutrient-rich topsoil
14
Q
Temperate Grasslands: Biotic
A
- Farm animals/grazing animals
- Tall grasses but VERY FEW trees
- Bison, prairie dog, mice, black-footed ferret, deer
15
Q
Savanna: Abiotic
A
- Extremely dry majority of the year
- Hot all year
- Instead of regular seasons, there is just wet/dry seasons
- Very little rain (only during wet seasons)
- Soil is old and low in fertility but can contain nutrients
