Biomedical Therapies - (Module 73) Flashcards
Biomedical Therapy
Changing the brain’s functioning with drugs, electroconvulsive shock, magnetic impulses, or psychosurgery
Psychopharmacology
Study the effects of drugs on mind and behavior
Psychosurgery
Surgery that removes or destroys brain tissue to change behavior
Lobotomy
Removes or destroys specific brain tissue or areas in an effort to control behavior
Antipsychotic Drugs
Similar enough to molecules of the neurotransmitter dopamine to block its activity
Anti-anxiety Drugs
Depress nervous system activity
Antidepressant Drugs
Increasing the availability of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine or serotonin, which elevate arousal and mood
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
Used on severely depressed patients in which a brief electric current is sent through the brain of an anesthetized patient
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation rTMS
Repeated pulses of magnetic energy to the brain; used to stimulate or suppress brain activity
Tardive Dyskinesia
Movement disorder associated with the use of antipsychotics
