Biomechanics: Wind tunnels Flashcards
1
Q
Wind tunnel
A
A chamber through which air is forced
2
Q
How wind tunnels work?
A
Object/performer tested is placed in the tunnel.
A controlled flow of air is forced through.
Airflow around the object studied to measure resistance around it.
3
Q
Benefits of wind tunnels
A
- Equipment & technique can be abated to increase the aerodynamic properties (reduce the effect of air resistance & increase performance)
- Wind speed & direction are controllable to mimic competitive conditions
- Individual pieces of equipment can be tested
4
Q
Disadvantages of wind tunnels
A
- Equipment is expensive & usually located in engineering facilities/research labs
- Real life conditions may impact unexpectedly so results not always realistic
