biomechanics Flashcards
what is the centre of gravity / mass
the point through which the entire mass of the body may be considered to act
does the centre of mass change
yes, it changes position as the body changes shape
what is balance
- when the body is in a state of equilibrium
- when the body is at rest or whilst it is moving
when do balance and equilibrium occur
they occur when the body’s centre of gravity falls with the base of support
what is the line of gravity
- a theoretical line that is drawn from the centre of gravity directly to the floor
- if the line of gravity falls inline with the base of support the body is in balance
is the formula for determining wether the body is on balance always effective
no, the formula isn’t always perfect and can sometimes be incorrect
what is stability
the ability to maintain balance
what is the most stable position
when the base of support is large and the centre of gravity is low
what is the most unstable position
when the base of support is small and the centre of gravity is high
what is the base of support
the area of ground bounded by the points of the body in contact with the floor
