Bioluminescence Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the role of bioluminescence in the marine environment
A
80% of marine animals produce light where symbiotic bacteria is often involved.
Light is produced in photophored by the oxidation of luciferin by luciferase.
Usually a blue or green colour so photophore light travels furthest under water.

Q
What are the functions of bioluminescence?
A
- Improves vision
- attracts prey
- important in recognition and signalling
- defense
- camouflage by means of counter-illumination.

Q
What is the overall role of sunlight and bioluminescence for marine life?
A
Sunlight - the driving force that fuels photosynthesis at the ocean surface.
Bioluminescence - the driving force for vision and adaptation in deep sea fish.
