Biology2 7D Ecosystems Flashcards
What is the term used to describe differences between organisms?
Variation
Give an example of ‘continuous variation’
Height, weight, hair length, Arm length

Give an example of ‘discontinous variation’.
Eye colour, shoe size

Give some adaptations of a polar bear to explain how it survives in the arctic.
Thick fur, white fur to catch prey, wide paws to walk on the ice.
What is a habitat?
Where an organism lives.
Which words describes and organism which is eaten by another?
Prey.
What type of organism is a cow?
herbivore

What is the name to describe an organism which makes its own energy?
Producer
Where is energy stored in an organism?
In its muscles and fat.
Name 2 physical factors which can effect the environment an organism lives in.
Light, temperature, soil type, wind speed, salinity.
Why was the pesticide DDT banned?
Because it is poisonous which gets more concentrated up the food cahin and was killing top predators such as peregrine falcons.
In a food chain, not all the energy is passed onto the next level. What happens to it?
It is lost as Movement, Respiration, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition.
Why are there always less predators in a food chain than prey?
Because the energy is lost through the food chain from one organism to another.
Plants need light to grow, apart from this what other resources do they need?
Water and minerals.
What word describes the moving of animals from one part of Earth to another?
Migration
What is the name of an organism which eats a producer?
Consumer.
How is this bird adapted to eat flesh?

A short, sharp and hooked beak can be used to tear flesh.

Top predator.
Changes during a year are called ___________ changes.
Seasonal.
Changes during a 24hr period are called _________ changes
Daily
What do you call an animal which comes out mainly at night?
Nocturnal.
Why are some animals nocturnal?
So there are less animals around which might attack it.
Why do some animals such as Bears hibernate in winter?
So it doesnt have to eat when there is little food in winter.
Give an example of an inherited feature.
Eye colour, hair colour, skin colour
Give an example of a feature which is not inherited, it is an environmental feature.
Scars, tattoos, piercings, broken bones.
